Softball Falls On The Road At Southern Miss
April 06, 2022 | Softball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Mississippi State fell, 3-0, on the road at Southern Miss on Wednesday night. The two teams combined for just six hits, three a piece, but one of the Golden Eagles' left the yard.
Aspen Wesley started in the circle for MSU (24-13, 5-4 SEC) and allowed just one hit, but that one hit was a two-run homer in the first to give Southern Miss (21-15, 1-8 C-USA) a lead it would not surrender. The Golden Eagles plated a final run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a throwing error.
The loss snapped the Bulldogs' streak of 11 straight in-state victories. State is now 20-4 against Mississippi programs under head coach Samantha Ricketts.
"We need to do a better job of coming out ready to compete from the first inning on and not waiting around until late in the game," Ricketts said. "We have to regroup and get refocused for this weekend and another big SEC series with Missouri coming to town."
Riley Hull reached base twice for State, drawing a two-out walk and singling to lead off the fifth inning. Jackie McKenna also drew a two-out walk, and her base hit opened the top of the seventh. Paige Cook picked up the Bulldogs' third hit, with a single to load the bases in the first inning.
That proved to be MSU's best scoring opportunity. Cook's hit followed a pair of walks, but a strikeout ended the frame with the bases loaded. MSU left seven runners on base across four innings.
Riley Hull – Moved to the nine-hole and went 1-for-2 with a walk and a base hit.
Jackie McKenna – Went 1-for-2 with a walk and a single.
Annie Willis – Threw 4.0 innings in relief without allowing an earned run … struck out six.
With one out, Jana Lee drew a walk before Alyssa Davis hit a two-run homer to left-center field.
