State Loses Series Finale To No. 18 Auburn
April 24, 2022 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State dropped the rubber match of its series with No. 18 Auburn, 9-2, on Sunday.
Â
The Bulldogs (29-19, 8-10 SEC) could not overcome a five-run second inning from the Tigers (36-10, 9-9 SEC).
Â
"We just need to be better. We need to continue to learn like we talked about all season long, from each series and each game," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "I think we have kind of cooled off from our beginning of the SEC stretch, and we have to find a way to get rolling again, in all three phases, pitching, hitting and defense. When you have two out of three you can compete. We just didn't have all 3 working today at all."
Â
Mia Davidson gave State a spark in the first with a double down the left-field line, and the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the inning. However, a strikeout and a fly out left the runners stranded.
Â
Auburn's first six batters of the fifth reached before a sacrifice fly scored another run. The Tigers sent 10 batters to the plate and collected four hits in the inning. They would add a run in fourth on a dropped fly ball with two outs.
Â
In the fifth, the Tigers scored with a homer, an RBI triple and a two-out single up the middle to result in the final score.Â
Â
The Bulldogs rallied with one out in the fifth after Shea Moreno and Davidson collected back-to-back singles. Paige Cook then delivered a two-out base hit that skipped past the left fielder to score both pinch runners.
Â
Â
Mia Davidson – Went 2-for-3 with a double for her 10th multi-hit game of the season.Â
Â
Shea Moreno – Went 2-for-3 for her seventh multi-hit game of the season.Â
Â
Brylie St. Clair – Stole her third base of the season … is 3-for-3 on steal attempts this year.
Â
Bri Ellis led off with a solo home run to center field. Nelia Peralta hit a double down the left-field line before Rose Roach came in to pinch run at second. Aubrie Lisenby singled through the right side to score Roach. Aspyn Godwin walked and Lisenby advanced to second. Riley McNemar attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error by the first baseman, advancing to second. Godwin advanced to third on the play, and Lisenby scored. Carlee McCondichie drew a walk to load the bases, before Lindsey Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Godwin. McNemar and McCondichie both advanced on the play. Makayla Packer bunted for a single to reload the bases. McNemar scored after Jessie Blaine hit into a fielder's choice at third that retired McCondichie.Â
