Lopez Ramirez Selected to International Team for 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup
April 19, 2022 | Women's Golf
Norman, Okla. – Mississippi State women's golf freshman Julia Lopez Ramirez was selected as a member of Team International for the 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup via International Team Committee Selection. The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced the teams Tuesday in conjunction with the Golf Channel.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and The GCAA in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top male/female collegiate golfers matching the United States vs the International Team. Since 2018, this is the only major tournament that features both men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
The top six golfers from the spring's final ranking from both the United States and International men and women shall be among the individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup. The remaining six spots for the United States will consist of five committee picks, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coach's pick. The balance of the International Team also includes five committee selections, including at least one representative from The R&A Student Tour Series, and a coach's pick.
Since being founded in 1997, The Arnold Palmer Cup has produced 101 members who have received professional cards. These 101 members have tallied 1,916 victories on the PGA/European Tour with 25 members going on to compete in the Ryder Cup.
Julia Lopez Ramirez has excelled in her debut season will the Bulldogs as a freshman. The Malaga, Spain native has won an SEC freshman best three events throughout the season while rewriting the record book. Lopez Ramirez has achieved weekly honors by the Southeastern Conference four times throughout the season as she was selected SEC Golfer of the Week twice (week of February 10, 2022 and week of March 3, 2022) as well as SEC Freshman of the Week twice (week of March 11, 2022 and March 31, 2022). Lopez Ramirez has broken the MSU record for rounds in the 60s (10) while achieving seven top-five finishes in 10 career events.
Since its inception, over 125 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on the PGA, European, or LPGA Tours; 32 have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, or Solheim Cup and more than 65 have claimed over 285 victories on the PGA, European, or LPGA Tours, including three major champions in both 2020 and 2021. The United States leads the Palmer Cup series 13-11-1
The 2022 Arnold Palmer Cup will take place at Golf Club de Geneve in Vandoeuvres, Switzerland from July 1-3. Golf Channel coverage of the tournament is still to be announced.
