STARKVILLE – Dashawn Davis has officially signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) to continue his career with the Mississippi State men's basketball program announced Thursday by head coach Chris Jans during the spring signing period.
Davis, a 6-2 guard from The Bronx, New York, is rated among ESPN's top 75 transfers. He has two years of collegiate eligibility remaining which includes a COVID season.
"We're excited about Dashawn Davis' decision to join our Bulldog basketball family," Jans said. "We've known 'Rams' [Davis] since his time at Trinity Valley Community College. He already has three years of college basketball experience and will be able to hit the ground running. We expect Rams to have an immediate impact next season."
Davis posted 10.9 points, a Pac-12 leading 5.5 assists, a 2.2 assist-to-turnover ratio and 1.4 steals per game during the 2021-22 season. The 2.2 assist-to-turnover mark and 1.4 steals also check in third and fourth, respectively, on the Pac-12 leaderboard.
The last Oregon State player to pace the Pac-12 Conference in assists was one of the game's all-time greats in Gary Payton, a Naismith Hall of Famer and NBA 75th Anniversary Team member.
Davis registered 15 games in double figures which was second on the Oregon State squad. His top four scoring performances and nine of his top 11 scoring efforts came against Pac-12 opponents.
Davis poured in a season's best 31 points versus No. 16 Southern Cal (Feb. 24) during a double overtime game. The 31 points was the fourth-highest single-game total for a Pac-12 player last season. He also secured a 22-point outing against NIT participant Colorado (Feb. 15).
Davis handed out 104 of his 148 assists during Pac-12 regular season contests, fifth-best in program history only behind Payton's four seasons. He improved his stat line to 6.1 assists and a 2.60 assist-to-turnover ratio in Pac-12 games. The New York native handed out seven-plus dimes 10 times headlined by 13 points and 11 assists versus Washington State (Feb. 28).
Defensively, Davis came away with multiple steals in 13 of 27 games. He and Washington's Terrell Brown Jr. were the only Pac-12 players to rank among the league's top 15 in scoring, top five in assists and top five in steals during conference games last season.
Davis played two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College in Texas where he was tabbed a 2020-21 NJCAA All-America First-Team selection. He amassed 17.1 points, 9.6 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game where he was rated the nation's No. 7 juco prospect by 227 sports as a sophomore.
Davis prepped at Our Saviour Lutheran High School in The Bronx, New York where he secured 19.6 points, 5.9 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game as a senior. He played AAU ball with the New York Wiz Kids and New York Lightning.
