STARKVILLE – Martavious Russell has inked his National Letter of Intent (NLI) with the Mississippi State men's basketball program announced Wednesday by head coach Chris Jans to begin the spring signing period.
Russell, a 6-4 guard from Coker, Alabama, dialed up 28.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.3 blocks and 2.9 steals per game for coach Adrian Scott at Sipsey Valley High School in 2021-22. He was a two-time All-State First-Team pick and was named Alabama's Class 5A Player of the Year as a senior.
"We're thrilled that Martavious has elected to join our men's basketball program," Jans said. "MJ is a wonderful young man who has a bright future both on and off the floor. He possesses a rare combination of athleticism and a work ethic to match it. We're looking to forward to helping MJ reach his dreams and goals."
Russell is rated the state of Alabama's No. 2 recruit according to 247 Sports for the Class of 2022. He tallied 19 points and nine rebounds during the Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game in March.
As a junior, Russell averaged 19.5 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He helped lead Sipsey Valley to the Alabama Class 5A Final Four. Russell also secured Class 4A All-State Third-Team accolades and a Class 4A Final Four trip during his sophomore season.
"I think Martavious has a chance to be a special player at Mississippi State," Scott said. "He has elite athleticism and is able to get to the rim and finish with ease. He's also shot the ball at a high percentage this year. Martavious is an extremely hard worker who leads by example and a great young man on top of it all."
