Mississippi State Men's Golf Dominates Day One of Mossy Oak Collegiate

STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State men's golf team came out in full force during the 2022 Mossy Oak Collegiate. The Bulldogs took their home course to their advantage and will head into the final day of competition at 12-under overall with three players in the top-12.

Due to darkness, the second round of competition was suspended. The Bulldogs completed 34 holes beforehand, tacking on 36 birdies in total. MSU maintained dominance after a 5-under first round performance and are 7-under thus far into the second round.

"I'm obviously really pleased with our guys play today," head coach Dusty Smith said after day one of competition at Mossy Oak. "I thought Ford Clegg, Hunter Logan, and Benjamin Nelson did a great job in the first round. Just to see the guys competing hard on their home golf course, protecting home turf, and just enjoying the day is really fun to watch."

Junior Hunter Logan held nothing back with a 68, 4-under, performance in the first round. This marks Logan's best round of the season. Logan shot back-to-back birdies for four consecutive holes to begin the back nine and ended the first round with an additional birdie on Hole 18. Going into the second round, Logan remained bogey-free for 25 straight holes where he added an additional four more birdies to his overall score. Going into the final day of competition, Logan is 8-under and in 2nd place.

Ben Nelson is taking nothing for granted with his senior year wrapping up. Nelson played steady golf throughout the entire day and is heading into his final regular season competition day at tied for 4th place with a 3-under score – his best score of the season.

Another Bulldog on the top of the leaderboard is Ford Clegg, who is sitting tied for 11th place at 2-under overall. Clegg had a 3-under first round performance after grabbing an eagle on Hole 10 with four additional birdies.

Pedro Cruz Silva will head into the final day of the Mossy Oak Collegiate at 2-over, tied for 40th place. Ruan Pretorius is not far behind at 5-over overall.

Individually for the Bulldogs, Harrison Davis and Jay Nimmo sit tied for 40th at 2-over with Loïc Ettlin at 3-over tied for 50th. William Wann will continue his season debut at 4-over, and Austin Vukovits will wrap it up for the Bulldogs at 5-over.

Mississippi State will resume second round play at 8:00 a.m. CT with continuous play to be followed to head into the third and final round of the 2022 Mossy Oak Collegiate.

"We're excited for the opportunity tomorrow," Smith stated. "We've got a lot of golf left to play, and we're looking forward to it."
