
Mississippi State Leads After Day One of Desert Mountain Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mississippi State men's golf had a high performance for day one of the Desert Mountain Classic to place them in first with four players in the top 20 on the individual leaderboard. Second round play was suspended due to darkness and will continue on Sunday. Â
"I'm proud of how the guys played today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We had a lot guys battling all day. We need to learn from how we finished today and clean some mistakes up. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us, and we look forward to the challenge."
The Bulldogs finished the first round with a team score of 276 (-12), tying for the fourth lowest first round score in program history. State tacked on 24 birdies and two eagles to earn the top spot on the leaderboard.Â
During the 15-18 holes of second round play that the Bulldogs did complete, Mississippi State maintained the lead and will continue into the second round shooting even overall.
Hunter Logan is currently leading for the Bulldogs as he is tied for second overall. During his first round, Logan shot a bogey-free front nine and added four birdies. Logan continued to play steady golf and beat the darkness in the second round with a bogey-free back nine to advance him on the leaderboard at tied for second place, just one stroke behind first.
Senior Ford Clegg had an impressive first round performance with two eagles, four birdies, and a bogey-free back nine to carry him into the second round. Clegg struggled during the second round but maintains a spot in the top 20 of the leaderboards at tied for 18th at 2-over and will continue his second-round tomorrow. Â
Sophomore Loïc Ettlin also contributed a striking first round tacking on five birdies on his last six holes on the back nine. Ettlin continued his success and is sitting tied for 12th at 1-over and will wrap up his second round tomorrow.Â
Sophomore Pedro Cruz Silva adds more success for the Bulldogs with eight birdies overall thus far in the competition. Cruz Silva is tied with Clegg 18th and has three holes left in his second round. Â
Seniors Austin Vukovits and Ben Nelson wrapped up for the Bulldogs. Vukovits, competing individually, is tied for 57th and Nelson is tied for 66th after day one of competition. Â
The Bulldogs will complete second round play tomorrow at approximately 8:40 a.m. CT and then immediately begin competition for the final round of the Desert Mountain Classic.
