Clegg Earns Top-20 Finish for the Bulldogs at Louisiana Classics
March 15, 2022 | Men's Golf
LAFAYETTE, La. – Mississippi State used a "dawg mentality" in the final round of the Louisiana Classics to rise five spots on the leaderboard and finish in eighth place. State shot 5-under (283) for the final round to complete their time in Lafayette at 2-over.
Â
Senior Ford Clegg led the Bulldogs in the comeback, shooting bogey-free for 16 consecutive holes in his final round. Clegg carded four birdies, two each on the front and back nine, to end his time at 5-under and tied for 13th place. That marked Clegg's fifth top-20 finish this season and ninth of his career. Thus far in the 2021-22 season, Clegg has placed in the top-20 in five out of six stroke-play tournaments.
Â
"Really proud of our fight today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "Last night I told the team when the seas get rough, you have two choices and that is to abandoned ship or to stay in there and gut it out. We chose to stay in and gut it out. It says a lot about the character of our team."
Â
"We have a lot to improve on," Smith added. "We need to understand how the course is playing, so we can make the proper adjustments sooner. We had a conservative game plan with soft greens and did not adjust until late in the second round. We also need to continue playing our game and within our system and that is doing the simple things well at an elite level."
Â
Junior Hunter Logan shot 2-under in his final round, tacking on four birdies on the back nine. Overall, Logan shot even on 38 holes to finish him tied for 31st at 1-over.
Â
Graduate Ruan Pretorius started his final round hot with three birdies on his first four holes before completing a bogey-free back nine. Pretorius ended his second career tournament with the Bulldogs tied for 41st at 3-over. Rounding it out for the Bulldogs, Pedro Cruz Silva and Jay Nimmo finished tied for 53rd at 6-over.
Â
Mississippi State will continue their spring season to compete in their third tournament of this month at the All-American Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas, on March 21-22.
