Women’s Tennis Falls To No. 11 Aggies
March 11, 2022 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's 64th-ranked women's tennis team dropped its Southeastern Conference home opener to No. 11 Texas A&M 7-0 on Friday.
The Bulldogs faced a tough task versus a Texas A&M team that features three ranked singles players and one ranked doubles tandem.
It was MSU's first home loss of the season, as the Bulldogs move to 8-6 and 0-3 in the SEC while the Aggies are now 17-1 and 3-0 in the league.
"We have to keep our chin up," said head coach Daryl Greenan. "We knew coming into SEC play we were going to face five of the top teams in the conference. There was a chance we could come up short there. We have a lot of opportunities ahead of us. We have those three out of the way. There are some things to build on. It's hard to take the losses. We are playing well enough and we are competing well enough. There need to be some adjustments. It is too soon to panic. We just need to make some minor adjustments and get ready for LSU."
In singles, MSU's Alexandra Mikhailuk took the first set 6-4, but Jayci Goldsmith bounced back in the second set 6-4 to extend the match to a super tiebreaker. The Aggies took the point 10-3.
Bulldog Chloé Cirotte played back-and-forth with No. 80 Mary Stoiana, but ultimately fell 7-6(4), 6-4. MSU's No. 116 Tamara Racine succumbed to 37th-ranked Tatiana Makarova 6-1, 6-0.
No. 94 Emmanouela Antonaki dropped her match to 41st-ranked Carson Branstine 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Alessia Tagliente fell to her opponent Gianna Pielet 6-3, 6-2. The Aggies Jeanette Mireles defeated Marta Falceto 6-3, 6-3.
The Bulldogs also lost the doubles point. Antonaki and Falceto lost 6-1 to the No. 27 tandem of Branstine and Stoiana, while Magda Adaloglou and Mikhailuk fell 6-0 to Mireles and Pielet.
Mississippi State continues its homestand with a match against LSU on Sunday at noon.
