March 01, 2022 | Football
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State University family mourns the loss of Harvey Hull, who passed away Friday [Feb. 25] in Waynesboro, Mississippi. Hull was one of the all-time greats in Bulldog football history. He was 66.
A native of Walnut Grove, Mississippi, Hull lettered four years at MSU as a defensive lineman from 1973-76. Earning second-team All American honors in 1976, Hull was also an All-SEC performer in 1974, 1975 and 1976. As a freshman, Hull helped the Bulldogs to a 1974 Sun Bowl victory over North Carolina.
Hull, who wore No. 99, recorded 454 career tackles which still ranks second all-time in school history. Following his collegiate career, he was selected to play in the 1976 North-South Shrine Game and the 1977 East-West Shrine Classic.
Hull was drafted in the 10th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. His professional football career ended abruptly when he suffered a catastrophic knee injury in a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. After a grueling year of rehabilitation from that injury, Hull went back to Mississippi State and earned his degree in physical education. He returned to football at his alma mater as an assistant coach, working with the defensive line.
Hull was later selected as a member of the Mississippi State Sports Hall of Fame and the Bulldogs' All-Decade Team.
The Bulldog family's thoughts and prayers are with Hull and his family.
