No. 19 Bulldogs Earn Doubleheader Victories
February 03, 2022 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – William Shakespeare penned a play entitled "All's Well That Ends Well" in 1623.
Mississippi State's men's tennis team could certainly relate to the title of that classic during their doubleheader on Thursday.
The 19th-ranked Bulldogs (5-1) began the day by dropping the doubles point to Memphis only to battle back and earn the win with four singles victories for a 4-1 win over the Tigers. MSU then shutout its second opponent, North Alabama, 4-0 for a twin bill sweep inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez were the only Bulldog doubles tandem to pick up a win against Memphis (3-2), defeating the Tiger duo of Pablo Alemany Malea and Harry Rock, 6-4. Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora came close to claiming the crucial doubles point for State but fell 7-6(5) to Oscar Cutting and Patrick Sydow.
"Losing doubles takes a lot of energy from you," Malesevic said. "Dade and I were the last two on the court and it was stressful to lose that, especially having two match points on my serve and double-faulting. But you have to clear your mind after doubles and go after it. I think we did a really good job and I'm proud."
No. 22 Florian Broska went straight to work in singles, evening the score with his 6-4, 6-2 victory over 112th-ranked Cutting.
Bautista Vilicich gave State the lead with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win against Pau Fanlo and was followed by Malesevic's three-set upset of No. 88 Jeremy Taylor 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
"That was the second ranked win for me in singles (this season)," Malesevic said. "The first set was a little complicated, but I pulled it out. In the second set, he played some good tennis I could see that he's a really good player. In the third set, I played one of my better sets of the season."
Tortora was able to clinch the first match of the day with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over Rock.
"They're getting used to playing a lot of good tennis again and pushing themselves mentally and focusing and locking in every point," said head coach Matt Roberts. "Every time we play, it's an opportunity to work your brain out. I tell them to take their brain to the gym. They're really starting to embody that."
The Bulldogs' brains and bodies got their second workout of the day later in the afternoon as they took on North Alabama (0-5).
Colas and Vilicich made short work of Guilherme Diniz and Sam Tolbert 6-0 while Malesevic and Tortora clinched the doubles points with their victory over Jamie Bixby and Chris Zhang of the Lions, 6-1.
Broska claimed his 10th-straight singles win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Fernando Herrera. It was also the 90th singles win of Broska's career pushing him past Herman Pappas (1981-84) for 10th all-time in Mississippi State history.
Malesevic followed up with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Carlos Matarredona 6-0, 6-3 and Gregor Ramskogler clinched the second victory of the day for the Bulldogs with his 6-1, 6-1 win against Diniz.
"I'm really happy with how everyone competed," Malesevic said. "We are much more resilient than last year and it's good to see that guys are pushing, one through six. There was some really good stuff on all six courts."
Redshirt freshman Seth Richey also made his dual-match debut against the Lions. Although Richey's match was suspended following Ramskogler's clincher, he did win his first collegiate set 7-6(5) against Bixby.
"Even though he hasn't played much in our dual matches, he's doing that at practice," Roberts said. "He went down 0-4 but had committed action in what he was trying to do. He looked loose and confident out there and got himself going. It's pretty cool to see Seth doing that. It's awesome and I'm happy for him."
The Bulldogs will complete their eight-match homestand on Sunday with a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech beginning at 10 a.m.
