State’s Rally Falls Short At LMU
February 13, 2022 | Softball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Bulldogs nearly rallied. Mississippi State brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning on Sunday, but fell, 5-3, at Loyola Marymount.
Down 5-1 entering the frame, MSU (1-3) quickly saw itself down to its final out. Kiki Edwards pinch hit and singled past the diving shortstop. Mia Davidson then hit a two-run homer to pull within two. Jackie McKenna kept the game alive with a single into left field, but Addison Purvis flied out to left field to end the ballgame.
"There's a lot of season ahead of us," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We need to compete like we did in the seventh inning from the very start. I was disappointed that I didn't see that same level of competitiveness from the first pitch. We're looking for players, one through nine, that are willing to step on the field and fight for each other."
State fell behind in the first after a passed ball and wild pitch pushed a runner to third and a double scored her. But the Bulldogs answered on another wild pitch in the top of the second after loading the bases.
Two LMU (1-4) home runs from Alyssa Daniel and Peyton Angulo helped the Lions retake the lead and extend it to a 5-1 advantage through four innings.
Paige Cook turned in a 2-for-3 day and scored the Bulldogs' first run. Davidson's home run pulled her within one long ball of tying the SEC career record.
Bri Bower started in the circle and struck out two while taking the loss. Annie Willis closed out the game, allowing two earned runs.
Mia Davidson – Hit the 70th home run of her career and is now one shy of the SEC career record (71) set by Florida's Lauren Haeger.
Kiki Edwards – Pinch hit and singled in her first at-bat of the year.
Riley Hull – Pinch hit in the sixth for her Bulldog debut and lined out hard to the center fielder.
Madisyn Kennedy – Was hit by a pitch and advanced to third.
Chloe Malau'ulu – Reached base in three plate appearances … drew two walks and singled in her third trip.
With one out, Sydney Poole singles to left field. She advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Val Pero then doubled her home.
