Shaw, Team USA Advance To Super Round At WBSC Men’s World Cup
November 30, 2022 | Softball
AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Mississippi State softball's volunteer assistant coach Zac Shaw has completed the opening round of play at the WBSC Men's Softball World Cup with Team USA.
Shaw has started every game at second base for an American team that went 3-2 in the opening round to advance to the Super Round.
The Americans opened their time in New Zealand with a 1-0 win against the Philippines on Nov. 26 in what was an early morning matchup at 1 a.m. CT back in the United States. They followed that with a win against the host nation at 8 p.m. CT that was an afternoon matchup the following day local time. Team USA defeated New Zealand, 7-0, for the first time since the 1988 World Cup. The win was also its largest on record against the Kiwis.
Shaw delivered an RBI single in the matchup with New Zealand before hitting his stride to close the pool play portion of the tournament. He doubled and scored a run the next day in a 6-3 loss to the Czech Republic.
In his fourth game, Shaw went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in an 8-4 victory over Cuba. Team USA ultimately fell, 5-3, against reigning world champions Argentina. Shaw drove in two of the Americans' three runs and doubled in that contest.
Team USA is one of six nations that has advanced to the Super Round to compete for a spot in the medal games. The Americans will be joined by Argentina, Canada, Australia, Cuba and Venezuela. Teams keep their records from the opening round against fellow teams that advanced. Therefore, the U.S. enters the Super Round with a 1-1 record and currently sits in third place.
The Americans open the Super Round at 6:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Nov. 30. They will play Australia at the same time on Dec. 1 and close the round against Venezuela at 5 p.m. CT on Dec. 2. The top two finishers in the Super Round will play for the World Championship on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. CT, while the Nos. 3 and 4 nations will play for bronze immediately following at 9 p.m. CT.
