Davidson-Smith Wins Pan Am Gold With Team USA

STARKVILLE – Team USA's perfect run through the 2022 WBSC Pan American Championship is now complete. The Americans took home gold and secured a berth in the WBSC Women's World Cup with a 12-1 victory over Team Canada in four innings.

Mississippi State's Mia Davidson-Smith closed the tournament with a .412 batting average and four extra-base hits, including three homers. Davidson-Smith started all nine games and played catcher and first base along with serving as the designated player.

The playoff round began with the Americans' first and only full-length game of the tournament. Canada took Team USA to a full seven innings, but ultimately fell, 8-2, in the quarter finals. Davidson-Smith was walked and hit by a pitch in that contest.

In the semifinals, Team USA defeated Cuba in five innings, but Davidson-Smith never had an official at-bat. Instead, she was walked three times and brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Canada worked its way back through the bracket for a rematch in the championship game, but the Americans quickly dispatched their northern neighbors, 12-1, in four innings. Davidson-Smith drew a walk and singled before scoring a run.

Team USA is one of 18 teams globally that has qualified for the group stage of the 2024 WBSC Women's Softball World Cup. Group games will be played in Ireland, Italy and Spain in 2023. The top two teams from each group along with two wild cards will move on to the final stage in Italy in 2024.
