Head Coach Charlie Ewing Inks Samantha Whateley and Avery Weed on National Signing Day

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State head coach Charlie Ewing announced the signing of Samantha Whateley and Avery Weed on Friday. This is the second National Signing Day for head coach Charlie Ewing and assistant coach Lauren Whyte at Mississippi State.
Samantha (Sam) Whateley hails from Johannesburg, South Africa by way of St. Mary's School. Whateley is a National Squad member of GolfRSA, the unified body of the South African Golf Association (SAGA) and Women's Golf South Africa (WGSA). Whateley not only excelled on the junior circuit last year, but she also rose to third in the Open Amateur Rankings on the back of some strong performances, including four top-three finishes. Throughout 2021, Whatley did not place outside the top 10 once. Whateley is also a member of South Africa's Women's Golf Elite Squad. Through 28 amateur events, Whateley has secured 25 top-10 finishes, winning five.
"Sam comes in with a wealth of experience competing all over the world," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "She has earned the privilege of representing her home country of South Africa on many occasions in team formats. That is a high honor for anybody to earn. Sam has a great balance to her game which attributes to her consistent scoring and quality performances. She has incredible character and will be a fantastic leader in our program for many years!"
Avery Weed hails from Ocean Springs, Miss by way of Ocean Springs High School. In 2021, Weed was named as one of 24 standout women's golfers in the country to the All-USA TODAY HSSA Girls Golf Team by USA Today. Through 9 amateur events, Weed has finished in the top 10 five times, winning the Mississippi Junior Amateur in 2021. In August, Weed qualified to participate US Women's Amateur Golf Tournament this week at Chambers Bay.
"Avery is a very talented and athletic golfer who has continued to show great improvements over the last couple of years," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "She has earned her way into multiple USGA events already and has competed at a very high level in a national schedule. She's a Bulldog through and through and truly understands what it means to be part of the Mississippi State family. We are thrilled to have her officially joining our program!"
Both Whateley and Weed will be incoming freshmen in 2023.
