Rogers Sets SEC Career Completions Record
October 08, 2022 | Football
STARKVILLE – With all the media coverage and social media in society today, it's hard to close in on a record quietly.
Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers had barely gotten off the field after beating Texas A&M last week when he learned he was only six completions shy of Aaron Murray's career Southeastern Conference mark.
And since the ball flies around as much as it does in Mike Leach's Air Raid offense, Rogers didn't have to wait long to break Murray's benchmark against Arkansas on Saturday. The junior signal caller connected on a 12-yard pass to Austin Williams late in the first quarter to tie the record and broke it on the very next play with a shovel pass that Dillon Johnson sprang for a 38-yard gain.
Rogers received a roaring ovation from the crowd of 57,849 on hand once it was acknowledged on the two massive jumbotrons in each end zone of Davis Wade Stadium.
"For it to happen at home at Davis Wade where I've been watching games since I was in second grade was pretty cool," Rogers said.
Rogers finished the 40-17 win over the Razorbacks by connecting on 31 of 48 passes for 395 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. So, the SEC completions record now stands at 946 and will continue to climb as long as the Brandon native suits up for the Bulldogs, which could be up to 2 ½ more seasons.
Maybe the most impressive aspect of Rogers' new record is that he was able to set it in 24 fewer games than Murray did from 2010-13. Rogers reached his completions mark in just 28 career games while it took the former Georgia quarterback 52 games to get there.
But that isn't the only benchmark Rogers is approaching. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder needs one more career touchdown throw to tie Dak Prescott's school record of 70. He is also third in MSU history with 8,624 yards of total offense and 70 career TDs.
"He's put up great numbers," said center Laquinston Sharp. "Will, he's our leader and we look up to him. He puts us on the same accord. He's doing his thing."
On the year, Rogers has completed 71.6 percent of his passes (202 of 282) for 2,110 yards, 22 touchdowns, all of which lead the conference and are among the nation's best.
Those statistics back up Leach's advocacy that his quarterback should be considered for the Heisman Trophy at the end of the year.
"I don't think there's any question whatsoever (that Rogers belongs in the Heisman Trophy conversation)," Leach said. "I'm extremely curious who somebody thinks is ahead of him."
As for Rogers, however, he's simply elated that the Bulldogs are off to a 5-1 start and are currently riding a three-game winning streak. The team's record is the one that really matters the most to him and the rest of the accolades and awards don't cross his mind much.
"It's cool I guess to be talked about as maybe one of the best players in the country but I don't think about it a lot," Rogers said. "I think with team success, individual success will come. I'm just trying to win every week."
