Mendizabal Rounds Out State Trio At U.S. Amateur
July 23, 2021 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – Valeria Mendizabal will compete at the 2021 U.S. Women's Amateur after being selected as an alternate. Mendizabal was notified this week that she will be invited to the tournament after narrowly missing at her qualifying round this summer.
Â
The senior joins her classmate Blair Stockett and junior Lauren Miller, giving Mississippi State three student-athletes in the 2021 field. In 2019, Ashley Gilliam advanced to match play in the tournament when it was held at State's home course Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
Â
Last month, Mendizabal was one of seven golfers who tied for the final three qualifying berths at Belle Meade Country Club in Nashville, Tennessee. She fell just short in the playoff holes and was named the first alternate.
Â
This year's U.S. Women's Amateur will be held at Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, on Aug. 2-8, featuring 156 players. The competition will consist of 36 holes of stroke play over the first two days before the field is cut to 64 for match play. Beginning with the Round of 64 on Aug. 4, the action will air on the GOLF Channel. NBC's Peacock will also stream match play on Aug. 5-6.
