STARKVILLE – Some of the country's top college quarterbacks are spending the weekend down in Louisiana and Mississippi State signal caller Will Rogers is among them.
Rogers is one of several quarterbacks selected to serve as a counselor for this year's Manning Passing Academy. The four-day event, which began on Thursday and runs through Sunday, is held at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. It serves as one of the country's premier football camps.
The Manning Passing Academy prides itself on helping high school quarterbacks, running backs, receivers and tight ends realize their full potential on and off the football field. Now, Rogers will be among the select few chosen to serve as mentors and aid in that process.
Rogers is one of a handful of State quarterbacks to participate in the Manning Passing Academy in recent years. Tyler Russell, Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald all served as counselors at the event. So, too, did Tommy Stevens just prior to his first season as a Bulldog, as well as KJ Costello a year before he came to Mississippi State.
As Rogers helps out at this year's Manning camp, it all comes as he nears his second season with the Bulldogs. The Brandon, Mississippi, native shined in his true freshman campaign with MSU last year.
Rogers became the first passer in program history to register three consecutive games with 30-plus completions. He had a streak of four straight games with 30-plus completions from November 7 through December 12. Already, Rogers is tied for No. 6 on MSU's all-time 300-yard passing games list. He had two such occurrences in 2020, becoming the first State freshman ever with multiple 300-yard passing games. In addition, he owns the single-season MSU record for completions by a freshman, ranks No. 3 on the single-season completions chart and set a freshman record with 1,976 total passing yards.
Rogers can now add Manning Passing Academy counselor to his already-impressive list of accomplishments ahead of his sophomore year getting underway when MSU opens up the 2021 season against Louisiana Tech on September 4.
