JavU Excels Abroad

Akureyri, Iceland – Mississippi State javelin throwers DJ Jónsson and Sindri Guðmundsson competed at the Icelandic Championships at the Þórsvöllur in Iceland just days after competing at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Jónsson continued to bring in the hardware as he was named Iceland's National Champion.

Jónsson finished as the new Icelandic Champion with a mark of 79.57m, a personal-best, in Akureyri.

Guðmundsson came in second just behind him at the Icelandic Championships with a mark at 74.99m. He was the champion in both 2018 and 2014.

They were the only two of the competitors to throw above 70m.

"What DJ and Sindri did this week is incredible!" said head coach Chris Woods. "They successfully represented the Mississippi State track and field program and JavU on two different continents in a matter of 72 hours. Additionally, DJ to be crowned the national champion of Iceland is nothing short of amazing."

The day after they competed in the NCAA final, Jónsson and Guðmundsson were on a plane back to Iceland.

In Eugene, Jónsson finished as the NCAA Runner-Up, taking home silver with a 76.73m throw. Guðmundsson came in fifth just behind teammate Tyriq Horsford to finish off his collegiate career with a mark at 75.61m. All three of the Bulldog javelin throwers earned First Team All-American honors in Eugene.

The Icelanders both look to compete in this summer's Olympic Games.
