Bulldogs to Send Over 20 to NCAA Prelims

The NCAA East Preliminary Regional will take place in Jacksonville from May 26-29.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State track and field team will have over 20 student-athletes competing in the NCAA East Preliminary Regional in Jacksonville, Florida, the league announced Thursday. The event will be hosted by the University of North Florida and the Jacksonville Sports Council.

To qualify for the NCAA Prelims, student-athletes had to be within the top-48 competitors in their event in their region while relay teams had to be in the top-24 of their region. Heptathletes and decathletes move on to the Championships in Eugene.

The Bulldogs will have all three men's javelin throwers in the prelims: DJ Jónsson, the NCAA leader, Sindri Guðmundsson, the NCAA runner-up, and Tyriq Horsford, the NCAA No. 9 and the East Region's No. 6. Sarah Blake will be the lone female javelin thrower for the Dawgs. The men will compete on Wednesday, May 26, while Sarah will throw on Thursday, May 27.

Continuing with throws, freshman and school record holder Jhordyn Stallworth will throw the discus at the prelims.

Cameron Crump will be competing in the long jump and Keshun Byrd will be in the triple jump for the men. Shayla Broughton will be competing in the women's long jump, with Alexis Farley and Amy Warren participating in the triple jump.Â

In the vertical jumps, the women will have Asia Poe in the high jump and Maddy Kish in the pole vault.

Jesse Henderson will compete in the 110m hurdles competition. Leon Clarke, Navasky Anderson, and Gabriel Moronta will run in the 800m prelims while Crump and Shamar Rose compete in the 200m. For the women, Jada McDougle will be in the 200m and 400m prelims, with Rosealee Cooper and Shayla Broughton running in the 100m hurdles. The 400m hurdles will have Katie Martin. Sydney Steely and Sylvia Russell will both run the 3000m steeplechase.

The relay participants for the men's and women's 4x100m relay and the men's 4x400m relay will be announced at a later date.

For the running events, the competitors must make it through both the first round and quarterfinals to move on to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The exceptions are the 5,000m, 10,000m and 3000m steeplechase competitions, which are just the semifinals before qualifying for the Championships. The relays will only be quarterfinals.

All field events will compete in only first rounds before the Championships.
