Baton Rouge Regional Cancelled Due To Weather, Bulldogs’ Season Over
May 12, 2021 | Women's Golf
BATON ROUGE, La. – As a result of inclement weather and poor course conditions, the NCAA deemed The University Club course to be "playable but not at a championship caliber" and decided to cancel the Baton Rouge Regional, bringing the Mississippi State women's golf team's 2020-21 campaign to an end.
"It's heartbreaking," MSU head coach Charlie Ewing said. "Nobody's season is supposed to end this way. You play the entire season in efforts to earn yourself a spot at the regional championship. There were 18 teams that did that this week and 12 of them have nothing to show for it. The emotions that I have are in regards to the players and teams that are on the losing end of this. I feel deeply for the student athletes, especially the seniors, but not only the seniors because it takes a team to get here. The reality is that team is never going to be back together the way it was constructed this year. Every year you have a different team. It's really hard to accept."
The University Club took on more than seven inches of rain in the past couple of days, forcing play on Monday and Tuesday to be postponed. Committee policy states that since play could not take place Wednesday, advancement was determined by the original seeding of teams used for selection to the 2021 championships, with the top six teams advancing to the NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs were the 12th-seed in the field.
"The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee regrets that the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships regional in Baton Rouge could not be conducted as scheduled this week," the NCAA said in a statement. "The Committee, NCAA staff and the Games Committee in Baton Rouge have been in constant communication throughout the past several days about the course conditions that have led to this unprecedented and most difficult decision."
Mississippi State ended the season on a high note, finishing second at the SEC Championships after besting a pair of top-5 teams during match play. It was the program's best finish ever in the event and gave State plenty of momentum heading into its 10th NCAA appearance.
