English recorded 69 saves for the Bulldogs in the 2019 season.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Mississippi State soccer goalkeeping alumna Gabby English has signed a contract with the Orlando Pride, the club announced Monday.
Â
English, a Winter Park, Florida, native, signed a National Team Replacement Player contract with the Pride after participating in the team's preseason training ahead of the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup. She spent a season with Portugal's Boavista FC as well. English will wear jersey No. 40 for the Pride.
Â
The Pride plays their first match of the Challenge Cup on Saturday, April 10, with a 7 p.m. ET kickoff against Racing Louisville FC, the newest expansion side of the NWSL.Â
Â
She joins the growing history of Bulldogs in the NWSL, with Mallory Eubanks having played for the Washington Spirit after being drafted in the second round in 2018, and Elisabeth Sullivan being drafted in the fourth round in 2014 by the Portland Thorns. Carly Mauldin played professionally with the Kakkonen League's Nurmijärven Jalkapalloseura in Finland, and Catalina Perez plays as a goalkeeper for Italian Serie A club Napoli Femminile and is on the Colombia Women's National Team.Â
Â
The goalkeeper played in 18 games for the Dawgs as a graduate student, transferring from San Diego State after playing three seasons as an Aztec. She had a 7-7-3 season in 2019, playing 1,624 minutes: the tenth-most of any Bulldog. She finished her career ranked fifth in the SEC with 69 saves, averaging 3.83 saves a match which was fourth in the SEC. She had 41 saves in league play. She earned the 20th shutout of her career in the win against Alabama A&M on August 22 that year. She posted a five-save match against No. RV/22 BYU, a five-save shutout against Eastern Washington, and a five-save win against Missouri. Had six saves against Idaho, Texas A&M, and No. 13/23 Arkansas. Against Georgia, she made an MSU-career-high seven saves. She tied that achievement with seven saves in the SEC Tournament against Ole Miss, the first Tournament appearance for State since 2004.
