
Two Wins, Personal Bests Set on Day One of Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Mississippi State track and field squad had several student-athletes record new personal records on the first day of the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida.
The Bulldogs had two first-place finishes on Friday, including Sylvia Russell in the 3000m steeplechase and DJ Jónsson in the men's javelin.
Russell ran to a new personal-best of 10:14.26 to finish the women's steeplechase in first. Sydney Steely came in second, running in her first steeple competition. Russell and Steely are now the No. 3 and No. 5 all-time for the steeple at Mississippi State, respectively.
Jónsson threw to a new personal-best of 77.25m in the men's javelin to finish in first place. At the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays, he threw to a mark of 74.70m. Tyriq Horsford finished in third with a mark of 72.43m.
Those who also had personal bests were Giacomo DeLuca in the 1500m, Katie Martin and Samuel Smith in the 400m hurdles, and Chandler Underwood in the 5000m.
In addition, Daniel Pepper threw to a mark of 53.54m in the hammer, moving himself into the No. 5 slot all-time at Mississippi State.
