Mississippi State Advances to SEC Championship Finals
April 17, 2021 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Behind strong play across the entire lineup, Mississippi State women's golf bested two top-5 teams in the country Saturday to advance to the SEC Championship finals at Greystone Golf & Country Club. All five Bulldogs won at least one match during their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups to fuel the incredible day.
MSU will be competing for its first-ever SEC Title on Sunday, as the Bulldogs are set to take on ninth-ranked Auburn. The two teams will tee off at 7:30 a.m. CT. The entire round will be televised on SEC Network.
"I thought we got off to a good start in both of our matches," MSU head coach Charlie Ewing said. "I felt like we were in a good place for the entire day. Everyone was really in control, so the poise and the body language of the team today was absolutely phenomenal. I can really see that this team is believing in itself as a team that belongs in a championship conversation. That's something that we've now earned. Everyone won a match and earned a point today, so that is huge for us as a team. Everybody has to chip in and each player did their job. That was crucial for us to be successful in both matches today."
In the semifinals, the Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead against No. 4 LSU, as Abbey Daniel and Blair Stockett won their matches 2 and 1. The top-seeded Tigers cut the advantage to 2-1, but Hannah Levi sank the biggest putt of her career to birdie Hole 18 and win the match for Mississippi State, 3-1.
Mississippi State opened match play against fourth-seeded Ole Miss in the quarterfinals. Levi and Clara Moyano posted strong performances, winning their rounds 4 and 3 against the fifth-ranked Rebels. With State holding a 2-1 advantage in the match, the decision came down to two tiebreakers. Daniel had a solid round but fell short on the 20th hole, but Ashley Gilliam sank a clutch putt on the 19th hole to give MSU the 3-2 victory.
