Women’s Golf Begins Postseason Play at SEC Championship
April 13, 2021 | Women's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State women's golf kicks off postseason play this week, as the Bulldogs are set to compete in the SEC Championship beginning Wednesday.
The five-day event includes both stroke and match play at the Greystone Golf & Country Club, a par-72, 6,253-yard course. Teams will begin the tournament with traditional stroke play from Wednesday until Friday. The top eight teams will advance to match play on Saturday and Sunday. The final round will be televised on SEC Network.
The stacked field consists of all 14 SEC teams and includes eight ranked squads, including No. 1 South Carolina, No. 4 LSU, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 9 Auburn and No. 10 Georgia. The Bulldogs will be no strangers to their opponents, as MSU faced fields that were made up of predominately SEC teams and other top squads from around the country all season.
"This is the most exciting time of the year," MSU head coach Charlie Ewing said. "It's the time that you've spent the entire regularly season working towards. All of these tournaments that we play are in preparation and anticipation of getting to this time of year. There is high-level excitement and a different feel in the air when you get to post season to play in a golf tournament labeled as a championship. We're looking forward to this week and being able to compete."
Leading State, sophomore Abbey Daniel takes the number one spot for the event. Daniel is the only Bulldog to compete in all eight events during the regular season. She leads the squad with eight rounds of par or better on the year, and her 75.0 season stroke average is tied for second on the team. Redshirt junior Hannah Levi is second in the lineup after a top-15 finish at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic, during which she recorded back-to-back under-par rounds.
Sophomore Ashley Gilliam will take the third slot, ranking seventh in the MSU record book with 19 rounds of par or better and fifth with six career rounds in the 60s. Senior Blair Stockett and graduate Clara Moyano round out the team of Bulldogs competing. Joining the squad in Birmingham as a substitute is junior Lauren Miller. Miller will have the opportunity to take the course in a coach's decision or if needed by injury or illness.
