No. 23 Bulldogs Win Sixth Straight In 10-4 Victory At Alabama State
March 09, 2021 | Softball
Â
The bats did the work for the No. 23 Bulldogs (14-5), as State overcame six errors in the field. Only one of the Hornets' (3-15) runs was earned as Annie Willis went 6.0 innings while striking out four.
Â
"It was good to see production from the middle and bottom part of our order, turning it over," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "AK [Segars] and Paige [Cook] both had great days, same with [Christian] Quinn in the nine hole. I thought we did a good job of holding our ground, having quality at-bats with the hit-by-pitches and walks."
Â
Anna Kate Segars and Mia Davidson hit homers in the game. For Davidson, it was the 58th long ball of her career, which landed her among the all-time top 10 in SEC history. She also recorded the 150th RBI of her career on the play.
Â
Segars finished a double shy of the cycle. She tripled to drive in a run then hit her two-run homer. She was hit by a pitch in her third plate appearance and beat out a bunt single in her fourth trip. The junior also reached on an error to make it on-base five times in the game.
Â
Paige Cook also collected three hits, coming a homer shy of the cycle. She doubled and scored in her first trip before hitting a triple. She added a single in the sixth inning. Segars, Cook and Christian Quinn stole bases in the contest.
Â
"Since Mia stepped on campus her freshman year, she's just been putting up big numbers. She's been very consistent especially with her power numbers and her home runs, so it's really cool to see her getting close to history. For her, it's just all about how can she contribute to the team and help us score runs. That's really what she takes pride in."
Â
Samantha Ricketts on Addison Purvis' pitching debut:
"It was nice to finally get Addison out there. I really loved how she came in and immediately attacked the zone. She looked confident and getting quick easy outs, groundballs, is exactly what we need from her."
