March 20, 2021 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Sunshine, clear skies and Bulldog tennis made for a great day Saturday as No. 20 Mississippi State collected its fifth 7-0 sweep of the season, ousting the Blazers of UAB in a non-conference battle at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
With the victory, State jumped to 12-5 on the season while UAB dropped to 4-7. The Bulldogs now hold a 30-1 all-time record against the Blazers in the series and now hold a 22-match win streak against UAB.
The Bulldogs would do quick work in doubles, only dropping one game to claim the early 1-0 lead against the Blazers. Court 3 would finish first, where State's duo of Giovanni Oradini and Stedman Strickland swept UAB's Parker Bradbary and Giovani Pasini 6-0. Clinching the doubles point would be court 1, where the MSU tandem of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler cruised past UAB's Michal Lusovsky and Roman Postolka in 6-1 fashion. At the time of clinch, court 2 was on serve at 4-4 with the Bulldog pair of Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora receiving serve from Blazers Daniel Janko and Vojtech Podzemny.
Despite some early UAB leads in singles, the Bulldogs would fight back to ultimately claim all six opening sets and go on to win all six matches in straight-set fashion.
Court 2 would conclude first where MSU's Malesevic breezed over UAB's Nikola Puric 6-0, 6-1, extending the Bulldog lead to 2-0. Finishing soon after was court 5, where State's Ramskogler downed the Blazers' Podzemny 6-2, 6-1.
Clinching the match for the Bulldogs would be the 36th-ranked Oradini who, after getting down 3-1 early, won 11 consecutive games to hand UAB's Postoka a 6-3, 6-0 setback at the top position in the lineup. The victory moved the MSU senior into a tie for 10th place in career singles wins by a Bulldog. Now with 88 singles victories, he matched Jeremy Bayon (88, 1997-2000) on the list.
The remaining three courts were then played out.
Next to conclude was the No. 6 spot, where MSU's Tortora stormed back from a 4-1 first-set deficit to oust UAB's Janko 6-4, 6-1. Finishing soon after was court 4, where MSU true freshman Carles Hernandez downed Blazer Thanos Spyropoulos 6-2, 6-4. Wrapping up afternoon action was the No. 3 spot, where MSU's Alberto Colas held off UAB's Lusovsky for a 6-4, 7-6(6) triumph.
Next upon on the slate, the Bulldogs jump back into conference play, hitting the road to face 18th-ranked rival Ole Miss at 1 p.m. CT next Sunday, March 28, in Oxford.
