Bulldogs Lead Three Top-5 Teams After Day 1 of Gamecock Intercollegiate
March 01, 2021 | Women's Golf
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mississippi State women's golf posted a strong round to open the Gamecock Intercollegiate on Monday, finishing the first day tied for third place with a team score of 287.
The stacked field consists of 11 ranked teams. Mississippi State is tied with No. 2 South Carolina and No. 11 Auburn and currently leads seven ranked teams, including top-ranked Baylor, No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 7 Ole Miss.
"I was really glad to see us get off to a strong start this morning," said head coach Charlie Ewing. "It's not something we have done as well as we have needed to at this point in the season, but we clearly set the tone for today. Blair Stockett led the way for us the entirety of day, and it was great seeing her roll putts in consistently. We had a good day, but we must demand a lot from ourselves and bring a high level of energy heading into tomorrow to continue the momentum."
Leading the Bulldogs, Stockett finished the round in a tie for first place after shooting 3-under par (69). The senior rolled in six birdies on the day to record her lowest round of the season.
The Bulldogs carded a combined total of 15 birdies, as the team recorded its second-lowest 18-hole score of the season. Three golfers finished the day inside the top 25.
Tied for 20th, sophomore Abbey Daniel and graduate Clara Moyano shot an even 72 in the first round, with a combined total of six birdies. Sophomore Ashley Gilliam shot 2-over par (74) to head into the second round tied for 35th, while redshirt sophomore Hannah Levi is tied for 47th after a 3-over par (75) first round.
"Tomorrow is going to be a long day with the adjustments made to the tee times preparing for the weather coming in," said Ewing. "It will certainly be a challenge for everybody to keep the right amount of focus and patience throughout the day, but I know this mean can handle it and we are excited to get back out there."
The Bulldogs will tee off the second round at 8:00 a.m. CT in a shotgun start, accompanied by Auburn and UNC. Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Wednesday morning, teams will begin the third round at 2:30 p.m. and will play until 5:45.
