MSU Men's Golf Improves to Finish Gator Invitational at 15th
February 13, 2021 | Men's Golf
Mississippi State's men's golf team closed a condensed Gator Invitational with a 15th-place finish. The Bulldog's completed the second round, which began on Friday, on Saturday morning before playing the final 18 holes.
Â
Senior Garrett Johnson continued to lead the Bulldogs through the tournament, finishing the second round, which began on Friday, with a 69 while shotting three birdies. In the final round, he added three more birdies to card a 71 and tie for 35th. Â
Â
"I thought we did a nice job of finishing our second round," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We hung in there the entire day. It takes all five guys in it every round to be successful at this level. I felt like we were one score away each round from playing very well. We have to do a better job of knowing our identity as a team and what makes us successful."
Â
Ford Clegg shot 73, 72 and a 4-under 66 in the final round of the tournament to complete a 54-hole total of 211. He finished tied for 53rd.
Â
Redshirt junior Ben Nelson improved his game in the second round firing a career-low round of 67. Â State finished at a 4-over 844 over the three rounds. Austin Vukovits, competing as an individual, carded his best score in the second round with a 73.
Â
"We have a lot to work on between now and our next event," Smith said. "I know our character, and I know we will do what it takes to be successful in our next opportunity. This was our next step. We learn from it and our experience and get back to work."
Â
Cameron Clarke shot his best round of the tournament on Saturday with a 70 after opening with a 72 and 75. Sophomore William Wann kept his game steady through the second round shooting a two-round total of 142 with a pair of 71s. On Saturday, he carded a 77 to close play.
Â
MSU returns to action on Feb. 26-28 at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The tournament will be played at the University Club.
