STARKVILLE – The second member of Mississippi State softball's 2022 signing class, Gabby Coffey, just returned home from representing Brazil at the 2021 Junior Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.
Coffey played six games with the Brazilians, with her best performance coming in a 7-0 victory over Venezuela where she drew two walks and hit for a single and a double. She also added a pair of hits in two games against Colombia to go along with a sacrifice fly.
"Gabby has been a Bulldog for a while now. She brings international experience and a powerful left-handed bat to go along with her ability to contribute both behind the dish and on the infield," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "I am excited to see her continue to grow within the program and believe her skillset will fit in well with this class."
In addition to the Junior Pan American Games, the catcher from Celina, Texas, also competed at the 2019 U-19 WBSC Softball World Cup going 5-for-15 with a triple and two RBIs in that tournament.
Coffey attends Prosper High School where her team was a 6A regional finalist in 2021 and co-district champions. She was named 6A First Team All-District 5 and DFW All-Metroplex Junior of the Year in 2021 after hitting 11 home runs with 42 RBIs. Coffey also drew 27 walks for a .590 on-base percentage.
"Gabby is an exciting player with a high ceiling and softball IQ," assistant coach Tyler Bratton said. "She is an elite receiver behind the plate with the communication and leadership skills to command the pitching staff for years to come. She is a gifted left-handed hitter that has a tremendous feel for the strike zone and displays power to all parts of the field. We are pumped to have Gabby joining our family."
As a freshman, Coffey was named the district catcher of the year after batting .474 with 30 RBIs and six homers. She then posted a .509 average as a sophomore with a .532 on-base percentage.
On the travel circuit, Coffey played with Texas Glory, winning the 2021 NTX Fall Shootout and the Texas Glory Summer Shootout. In 2020, her club was the runners-up at the 2020 Tier 1 Fall TFL Championship.
"I chose Mississippi State because of the family environment the university brings. They're a big time school in the SEC, but it has a small town feel," Coffey said. "The coaching staff is amazing. They want the best for you in all aspects of life, not just on the softball field. They have big goals for the program and us players individually, which motivates me personally to want to be a better player and person."
Mississippi State softball signed six student-athletes on National Signing Day on Nov. 10. State's class was ranked No. 17 by Extra Innings Softball, the highest-ranked class under Ricketts. Five of the six signees were ranked among the nation's top 100 players. The Bulldogs will continue to release an in-depth look at each signee throughout the month of December.
