STARKVILLE – A dominant performance from start-to-finish enabled the Mississippi State men's basketball team to dial up an 86-49 rout over Montana on Saturday evening at Humphrey Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (2-0), who are receiving votes in the Associated Press top 25, have won 36 of their last 37 non-conference home decision games under Ben Howland.
State had four players fire in double figures to propel a balanced offensive attack where the Bulldogs connected on 32-of-61 shooting clip, ignited by 13 three-pointers. The Maroon and White bottled up Montana to 16 first-half points and held the Grizzlies to 16-for-55 and a 29.1 percent mark from the floor.
Iverson Molinar, a consensus All-SEC First-Team pick, poured in a team-leading 16 points to go with seven rebounds and six assists.
Shakeel Moore added 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while D.J. Jeffries scored 15 points of his own.
Cameron Matthews tallied 11 points, and Garrison Brooks nearly collected a double-double with nine points coupled with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Off the bench, Cam Carter was solid with eight points and a team-leading seven assists against zero turnovers. Andersson Garcia notched six points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Bulldogs got rolling behind five consecutive field goals to build a 12-2 advantage at the 13:45 mark. Matthews did the heavy lifting with eight points, fueled by an alley-oop jam from Moore and a pair of treys.
State ripped off 13 of the last 15 points of the opening stanza to extend its lead to 42-16 at the break. The Bulldogs limited Montana to a 6-for-27 shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes.
The Maroon and White kept the momentum on its side with 13 straight points to begin the second half. State drained its first five shot attempts, highlighted by a Molinar block. He ended up going coast-to-coast for a layup. Then, a Matthews steals turned into a Moore acrobatic layup to bring the score to 55-16 with 17:13 remaining.
The Bulldogs hit on 13 of their first 18 shot attempts and canned 6-for-9 from three-point territory. State took its largest lead by 42 points on two occasions, the latest at 83-41 with 5:23 to go on a Javian Davis jump hook.
Up next, the Bulldogs take on Detroit Mercy on Wednesday from the Horizon League. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. CT carried online by SEC Network+ and the Watch ESPN app.
