Men's Tennis Wins Seven More On Saturday
October 02, 2021 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – The Maroon and White continued to stand tall with seven more wins on the second day of the MSU Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
Mississippi State players swept their three doubles matches and posted a 4-2 mark in singles competition against Michigan's contingent to improve to 14-4 overall on the weekend.
"They really brought the energy from the first point in doubles through the end of singles," said MSU assistant coach Jake Jacoby. "I saw one of the coolest doubles points that I've ever seen since I've been here and we carried that into singles. Michigan always competes well and are incredibly well-coached. Up-and-down and one through six, it was a good war today. They were excited to play and got everything they expected."
The Bulldogs sixth-ranked doubles team of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler rolled 6-2 over Jacob Bickersteth and Nino Ehrenschneider. Nemanja Malesevic and Davide Tortora along with Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez were also 6-4 winners in doubles action against the Wolverine tandems of Will Cooksey and Ondrej Styler and Nick Beaty and Ryan Fu, respectively.
No. 27 Broska, No. 54 Tortora, No. 92 Colas and Ramskogler all won in straight sets in singles play. Broska beat Bickersteth 6-4, 6-3 and Tortora was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Alexander Zederbauer.
Colas, who made his fall debut on Saturday, earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Patorn Hanchaikul.
"I got to play doubles with Carles for my first match and I think we played good," Colas said. "I had a good start in singles. But in the second set, (Hanchaikul) pushed back and I think I did a good job."
Ramskogler took his first set 6-3 over Cooksey but found himself down 3-1 early in the second. The senior from Austria then rallied to win five of the next six games to secure the 6-4 win.
"You have to say resilient and focused on a game plan that's working and has been successful and make adjustments," Jacoby said. "If you get frustrated, you're not able to make those adjustments and comebacks. Ram is a really good example of what I think our whole team is capable of doing."
State's lone losses came as Malesevic – ranked 36th nationally – was upset by Ehrenschneider 6-4, 6-0 and Hernandez fell to Beaty 6-2, 6-4.
The Bulldogs will close the event at 1 p.m. on Sunday against players from Alabama.
Sunday's matches will be moved inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion due to expected inclement weather. A campus-wide mandate requires masks to be worn indoors.
