Men's Tennis Earns Five Victories

AUBURN, Ala., - The first day of main draw singles play on Saturday saw Mississippi State earn a pair of wins in addition to three doubles victories.
Alberto Colas and Carles Hernandez had a hand in four of the Bulldogs wins on the day. Colas and Hernandez won both of their doubles matches together while also each earning a singles victory.
After receiving a first round bye as the tournament's No. 8 seed, Colas and Hernandez downed Pawin Jirapoomdajc and Paswee Reansuwong of Southern Miss 8-3 in the second round and followed up with a third-round win over Jacksonville State's Vicente Arbelaez and Jordi Blanchar, 8-3.
In singles action, Colas – ranked No. 92 nationally – dispatched John Halquist Lithén of Ole Miss in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 while Hernandez defeated Tulane's Billy Suarez 6-4, 6-4.
MSU's sixth-ranked doubles team of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler also reached the win column following a first round bye as the tournament's top seed. Broska and Ramskogler beat the Jacksonville State tandem of Thomas Norwood and Alexander Vishnevsky 8-6 before bowing out in the third round to Niko Slavik and Simon Junk of Ole Miss, 8-4.
Junk also had a singles win over 54th-ranked Davide Tortora. Tortora took the first set 6-3 but dropped the next two 6-4, 6-3.
No. 27 Broska and Ramskogler also battled for three sets in singles play only to come up short. Broska fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to Jan Galka of Auburn on his home court while Ramskogler lost to LSU's Boris Kozlov 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Colas and Hernandez will play in the doubles quarterfinals against Alabama's Filip Planisek and Juan Martin on Sunday at 3 p.m.
They also advance to the second round of the singles main draw as well on Sunday at 9 a.m. Hernandez squares off against Carles Anton of Troy while Colas competes against Tulane's Rafael de Alba.
Three Bulldogs will also have consolation matches coming up on Sunday. Tortora takes on Sebastien Collard of South Alabama at 9 a.m. while Ramskogler matches up with No. 19 Tyler Stice of Auburn and Broska battles Southern Miss' Olimjon Nabiev.
Ramskogler and Broska's matches begin at 10:30 a.m.
Seth Richey is also scheduled to have a pickup match against Ole Miss' Walker Stearns at 10 a.m.
