Softball Participating In Geaux Teal Fundraiser Friday
October 15, 2021 | Softball
IRONDALE, Ala. – Mississippi State's softball program will participate in a fundraiser for the Geaux Teal Foundation on Friday evening, playing Birmingham-Southern at 7 p.m. CT in Irondale, Alabama.
The scrimmage will be a fundraiser for ovarian cancer awareness to continue spreading the legacy and the lasting memory of Alex Wilcox and will be played at Wilcox's former travel team's facility, the Shea Brothers Softball Complex. The Wilcox family has chosen the Geaux Teal Foundation to receive the fundraiser proceeds. A $5 minimum donation will be collected for admission.
"Mississippi State University and especially Mississippi State Softball continue to show why they are so special," Shaun Wilcox, Alex's father, said. "They continue to honor Alex as a teammate and part of the Mississippi State family. They also honor her by continuing her fight and proudly displaying the teal colors to bring ovarian cancer awareness to ladies young and old."
Additionally, fans in attendance will be able to enter a 50/50 raffle and purchase teal merchandise. A silent auction featuring items donated by various MSU athletic teams will also benefit the foundation. The highlight of the auction items is a replica of the custom glove that Wilcox designed in her freshman season at MSU, donated by Rawlings.
Wilcox was a member of the 2018 Mississippi State softball team who inspired the nation with her courageous fight against ovarian cancer. During her freshman season, Wilcox continued to practice while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
MSU immortalized Wilcox on Sept. 15, 2018, when the university retired her No. 8 jersey, making her the first female student-athlete in Mississippi State history to receive the honor. The MSU softball team has continued to honor her legacy by wearing teal uniforms in select games to raise awareness of ovarian cancer.
"Alex understood it wasn't all about her. She put a face on this awful disease that effects so many women every year," Shaun added. "If we can reach anybody and convince them to be aware of symptoms to the point the disease can be caught early, then there is such a great possibility they can be cured. Mississippi State continues to be there for Alex as they would be for any of their family, and they bring true meaning to the statement 'No one fights Alone.'"
