#FromStateToSundays: Week 5 Update
October 12, 2021 | Football
STARKVILLE – Week 5 of NFL was yet another example of former Mississippi State standouts excelling in all three phases at the next level.
Darius Slay picked off a pair of passes in Philadelphia's 21-18 win at the Panthers. It was his third career game with multiple interceptions and first since 2017. It was also the first time an Eagles cornerback has recorded multiple picks in a game since 2012.
Slay was not former Bulldog defender to shine for the Eagles. Fletcher Cox sacked the quarterback for his 55.5th career sack, which ranks fifth overall in franchise history and the most by a defensive tackle.
Preston Smith also added a sack and a tackle for loss in Green Bay's 25-22 win at the Bengals. Hill caught his first career pass in that contest as well for the Packers.
But it was not all good news for Green Bay last week as linebacker Chauncey Rivers was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending with a torn anterior cruciate ligament on the second to last play of practice last Wednesday. Rivers had appeared in three games this season and made two tackles.
Another linebacker, Willie Gay Jr., made his return from the IR last week. Gay graded out with the Chiefs' third-best overall defensive grade (70.1) from Pro Football Focus (PFF) and No. 2 in coverage (76.4).
Dak Prescott guided Dallas to its fourth consecutive win and threw three touchdowns in the process – one of which went for a season-long 49 yards. It was the third straight game Prescott has tossed three or more scores and now has 22 such games over his career, which ranks as the second-most in Cowboys history.
Gabe Jackson played every offensive snap for Seattle last week and received the Seahawks' highest pass-blocking grade by an offensive lineman.
Jeffery Simmons provided seven quarterback pressures for the Titans against the Jaguars. That total was tied for third in the NFL last week. Logan Cooke kicked off four times for Jacksonville in that contest with all four going for touchbacks.
Cooke also ranks second in the NFL in net punt average (45.2 yards) and became a father on Monday.
