Spencer piled up 22.5 tackles for loss over his five seasons with the Maroon and White
STARKVILLE – One of the top defensive linemen in the Southeastern Conference over the past five seasons, Marquiss Spencer has announced his intent to enter his name in the 2021 NFL Draft process.
One of the top defensive line prospects in Mississippi out of Greenwood High School, Spencer made an impact immediately up front for the Maroon and White and ultimately appeared in 51 games during his career. A two-time member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, he earned his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies in December 2020.
In 2020, Spencer was one of the most disruptive interior defenders and finished tied for third among defensive linemen with 8.0 tackles for loss in just nine games. He made at least 0.5 tackle for loss in six of his nine appearances, including 2.5 at Kentucky and 2.0 in a season-opening win at LSU.
Missing the final two games of the season due to injury, Spencer set career bests in tackles for loss (8.0) and sacks (3.0), while pulling in his first career interception against Vanderbilt. His 30 tackles are the second most in his career – trailing his 37-stop season in 2019.
Over his career, Spencer totaled 22.5 tackles for loss, including 7.0 sacks, among his 106 career tackles. He forced three fumbles, recovered three fumbles and made one interception. He appeared in 25 games over his first two seasons on campus, before earning a redshirt after suffering an injury four games into the 2018 campaign. He then started 22 of the final 24 games of his career, missing the final two with injury.
The 2021 NFL draft will take place in Cleveland, Ohio, with the first round on April 29. Rounds 2 and 3 will be on April 30, while Rounds 4 through 7 will be on May 1.
