STARKVILLE – Honoring their late teammate Alex Wilcox, the Mississippi State softball program participated in the Geaux Teal Virtual Walk on Saturday following practice.

Wilcox was a member of the 2018 Mississippi State softball team who inspired the nation with her courageous fight against ovarian cancer. That fight ultimately took her life in the summer of 2018. The Bulldogs continue to wear teal uniforms during midweek games and promote their #NoOneFightsAlone campaign in her memory.
Â
"We want to really make sure that every class here understands the impact that Alex has had on this program, on their teammates, on their coaches," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We continue to share how great she was as a person. I think what she did on the field exemplifies a little bit extra. That was all a bonus. Any time she spent on the field was a bonus. She was so joyful and appreciative of the opportunity to be out there."
Â
The Bulldogs were originally scheduled to participate in the Geaux Teal Walk in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on March 21 before their scheduled game at LSU, but the event was cancelled due to COVID-19. Instead, the Geaux Teal Foundation, created by LSU head coach Beth Torina, offered a virtual walk this fall.
Â
"We have a platform that we want to share and remember her by," Ricketts added. "Ultimately, if we can share the symptoms and prevent another young girl from going through this the way Alex did, it's worth it."
Â
Once their practice had concluded, several student-athletes that knew Alex spoke to the team, sharing stories of her life. State's student-athletes, coaches, managers and support staff then walked from Nusz Park around Chadwick Lake.
Â

Multiple SEC softball teams and coaches also participated in their own virtual Geaux Teal walks on Saturday.
Â
MSU immortalized Wilcox on Sept. 15, 2018 when the university retired her No. 8 jersey, making her the first female student-athlete in Mississippi State history to receive the honor. All 13 SEC softball teams were awarded the league's Sportsmanship Award in 2018 for their united support of Wilcox throughout her final year of competition.
