Mauga and Pendley go head-to-head in Monday night showcase on CBS Sports Network
CHICAGO – Two members of Mississippi State softball's 2020 coaching staff continue their seasons with Athletes Unlimited this weekend. Katiyana Mauga, who is currently ranked 10th in the league, will play with Team Osterman this week, and Nicole Pendley was drafted by Team Ocasio.
Â
Aleshia Ocasio withdrew from the league due to a family emergency, so her squad will now be captained by Erika Piancastelli. Pendley and Team Piancastelli lead off the weekend at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday against Team Sanders on ESPN3. Mauga will follow at 6:30 p.m. against Team Reed, also on ESPN3.
Â
On Sunday, Pendley again opens the day at noon. Mauga's game will follow at 3 p.m. Both contests will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Â
The duo ends Week 3 in the Monday night showcase on CBS Sports Network at 7 p.m. The game will be notable for Pendley, who will face her sister Shelby as an opponent for the first time in an organized setting.
Â
"It's going to be competitive playing against each other, but at the same time we'll be rooting for each other," Pendley told Athletes Unlimited. "It'll be fun. I think she'll give me a little smirk, but deep down she really wants to win."
Â
Athletes Unlimited is the newest professional softball league, but the organization does not feature traditional teams. Instead, 56 athletes – 17 of whom played in the SEC –are drafted to one of four new teams each week. Following the final game of each week, the top four athletes are named captains for the next week's draft.
Â
Captains are selected by virtue of a unique individual scoring system that mimics most fantasy league scoring systems. Players earn or lose points as individuals based on their statistics along with an additional 10 points for every inning their team wins and 50 points for every game their team wins. Additionally, 60 points are available to the athlete who finishes first in MVP voting by the players following each game. The second and third place vote getters receive 40 and 20 points, respectively.
Â
Points also translate to dollars at the end of the season, and each athlete has chosen a charity to receive a donation equal to 50 percent of their season bonus through the Athletes Causes program powered by Give Lively. Pendley is playing for the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and Mauga's play benefits Black Girls Code.
