Pendley Named Opening Day Captain in Athletes Unlimited Softball League

Mauga also among available players to be drafted as league begins play Saturday
CHICAGO – Mississippi State graduate assistant Nicole Pendley has been selected as one of four captains for the first weekend of the inaugural Athletes Unlimited softball season.
Athletes Unlimited is the newest professional softball league, but the organization does not feature traditional teams. Instead, 60 athletes will remain Chicago for the duration of the season and be drafted to one of four new teams each week. Following the final game of each week, the top four athletes will be named captains for the next week's player draft. All games will be broadcast on ESPN2, ESPN3 or CBS Sports Network.
Captains are selected by virtue of a unique individual scoring system that mimics most fantasy league scoring systems. Players earn or lose points as individuals based on their statistics along with an additional 10 points for every inning their team wins and 50 points for every game their team wins. Additionally, 60 points are available to the athlete who finishes first in MVP voting by the players following each game. The second and third place vote getters receive 40 and 20 points, respectively.
Pendley finished third in points through the preseason scrimmages to earn captain status. She will select her teammates in a school-yard pick format streamed on YouTube on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. CT. Team Pendley opens the season as the second game of the day on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Katiyana Mauga, another member of the Bulldogs' 2020 coaching staff, will also be playing with Athletes Unlimited over the next six weeks and is available to be selected in Wednesday night's draft. The first game of the Athletes Unlimited season begins at noon on Saturday and will also air on ESPN2.
