STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's basketball coach Ben Howland has signed Javian Davis to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) announced Wednesday.
Davis, a 6-9 forward from Canton, Mississippi, averaged 6.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game over his 31 appearances as a redshirt freshman at Alabama during the 2019-20 season. He connected on 59.4 percent (60-of-101) of his field goal attempts and 61.5 percent (64-of-104) at the free throw line.
The Crimson Tide won seven of their nine games when Davis provided double figures. He ripped off season-highs with 20 points and 10 rebounds versus South Carolina (Feb. 29). Davis also logged 11 points against Arkansas (Feb. 1), 13 points at Georgia (Feb. 8) and 10 points at Ole Miss (Feb. 22) during SEC action. His top non-conference performances were a 19-point, 9-rebound effort versus Florida Atlantic (Nov. 11) followed by 12 points and six rebounds against Belmont (Dec. 21).
In the classroom, Davis was a 2020 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and 2019 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll recipient. He chose the Bulldogs over Georgetown, Wake Forest and Xavier among others.
Davis' prep career was sparked by a 29-4 campaign and a 5A state semifinals appearance in 2017-18 at Canton High School under coach Russell Evans. He secured 17.0 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game en route to an All-State First-Team selection by USA Today and an All-State Second-Team nod by the Jackson Clarion-Ledger as a senior.
Davis averaged 16.2 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game during his junior season. He was tabbed to the Clarion Ledger's Dandy Dozen list and chosen to the 2017 Mississippi North/South All-Star team where he captured Most Valuable Defense Player with 18 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Davis was rated the state of Mississippi's No. 3 prospect by 247 Sports behind Robert Woodard II and D.J. Stewart Jr. for the Class of 2018. He played the AAU circuit for Team Thad based in Memphis, Tennessee and was chosen to attend the NBPA top 100 camp during the summer of 2017.
COACH HOWLAND ON DAVIS
"We're thrilled to have Javian join our Mississippi State basketball family. He has a tremendous work ethic, and he has already proven that he can be very productive in our conference. I love Javian's passion for the game, and I believe he'll be a good fit for our program."
Mississippi State won 11 of its last 15 SEC games to earn a top 4 finish in the conference standings, the program's highest overall regular season finish since 2010-11. The Bulldogs have tucked away three consecutive 20-plus win seasons under sixth-year coach Ben Howland. The last time the program accomplished that feat was the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. The 68 victories also are the fourth-highest total in program history for a three-year span.
