Johnson, Clegg Selected for 120th U.S. Amateur Championship

STARKVILLE – A pair of Mississippi State men's golf student-athletes will have the honor of participating in the 120th U.S. Amateur Championship as Garrett Johnson and Ford Clegg each received invitations from the United States Golf Association this week.

The tournament will take place August 10-16 at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon. Both qualified for the event based on their World Amateur Golf Ranking placement.

Johnson boasted a 70.81 stroke average, the second-lowest mark in program history, during the 2020 season. He posted a pair of runner-up finishes at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational and Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. In April, Johnson was awarded an extra year of eligibility for the 2020-21 campaign via the NCAA's Extension-of-Eligibility waiver.

Clegg's 2019-20 season was highlighted by his first collegiate win, coming in October at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational where he led State to a team victory. Clegg's 71.95 stroke average was No. 3 on the team.

With the addition of Johnson and Clegg, Mississippi State boasts three U.S. Amateur participants over the last two years after current Bulldog Daniel Martinez competed in the 2019 edition of the tournament.
