STARKVILLE -- After a win and a top-25 season ending early due to COVID-19 concerns, the Mississippi State women's golf team welcomes back seniors Clara Moyano and Ela Grimwood, who will take advantage of the NCAA's Extension-of-Eligibility waiver and return to the program next season.
Â
"The importance of leadership and guidance that these two will provide cannot be overemphasized," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "both have been an impact on our program, with very strong GPAs and successful golf careers, as well as in the community here at Mississippi State.
Â
"Ela had the redshirt year due to injury, and we are looking forward to having her back. She has worked very hard with the rehabilitation process, and she deserves this opportunity to be back for another year. Needless to say, we have unfinished business to take care of, and Clara will be back to play a key role in that. She had a spectacular season, and we are excited to see her excel for one more year with the program."
Â
A Madrid, Spain native, Moyano transferred to Mississippi State her sophomore year from the University of Idaho. Following her first season on the team, she was named to the First Year SEC Academic Honor Roll, earned WGCA Academic All-American honors and posted a season-low round of 69 during her best finish (T21st) at the Magnolia Invitational.Â
Â
This year, she ranked 13th in the SEC with a 72.33 stroke average and had eight rounds of par or better, which was second on the team. She earned four top-20 finishes in six events during the shortened campaign. Moyano recorded four top-35 finishes during the 2018-2019 season.
Â
"Getting the chance to wear Maroon and White for one more year is the opportunity of a lifetime that you don't turn down," said Moyano. "I can't wait to tee up next fall and finish what we started this year."
Â
Grimwood joined the squad the second half of her freshman year, coming from Auckland, New Zealand, where she received the Sports Woman of the Year Award three years in a row. Since then, she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, earned WGCA Academic All-American honors and helped the team reach match play for the first time at the 2019 SEC Championship.
Â
This year, Grimwood utilized her redshirt season by being selected as one of the first class of student-athletes to participate in the inaugural Bulldog Experiential Learning Internship for the Student-Athlete Development Office. She aspires to become a certified teaching professional in the Professional Golf Association.
Â
"I'm thrilled to be able to return to Starkville next year," said Grimwood. "The team really is my second family, and the opportunity to spend another year with my sisters is not one that I take for granted. I'm so grateful for this opportunity."
