STARKVILLE – After the 2019-20 season was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, Mississippi State men's golf senior Garrett Johnson announced Tuesday that he will take advantage of the NCAA's Extension-of-Eligibility waiver and participate in the program's next season.
"I am really excited that Garrett is coming back for one more season," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "His leadership and his desire to be great will elevate our team for another year. I know he and our team have some unfinished business to take care of. The season obviously ended in an unfortunate way, but we look forward to getting back out there when it is safe to do so."
Johnson has played in 32 straight tournaments for the program, a streak that goes back to his freshman season in 2016-17. In March 2019, Johnson led MSU to its first tournament win since 2014 when he finished as the individual medalist at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate. The senior also finished in the top 15 at MSU's home event, the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, in all three tries.
A Kimberly, Ala. native, Johnson led MSU with a 70.81 stroke average through seven events. He carded three top 15 and two top five finishes, including a runner-up finish in March at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, MSU's final event of the season. Johnson was the program's lone senior when spring sports were canceled in March, following Peng Pichaikool's decision to pursue professional golf in February..
