STARKVILLE – After an incredible first year as a Mississippi State Bulldog, freshman Ashley Gilliam was named to the WGCA All-American Honorable Mention Team on Tuesday.
"Ashley has been a committed Bulldog for years now," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "She has grown so much as a freshman in every aspect of her life. This kind of growth is a testament to her dedication to getting better. Her obvious work ethic, changes she has made in her nutrition, strength and conditioning, and expanding her mental game skill are why she is reaching the unprecedented heights as a freshman here at Mississippi State."
Gilliam earned a sixth-place ranking in the most recent Arnold Palmer Cup standings. She also ranked sixth in Division I, second in the SEC and set the MSU program record with a 70.61 season stroke average. In addition, she set the MSU freshman records for Rounds of Par or Better (13) and Rounds in the 60s (5).
Overall, Gilliam is ranked 43rd in the country after posting four top-10 finishes, including three performances inside the top-three. She was named SEC Golfer of the Week after finishing tied for second at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, where she shot 203, marking the second-lowest score in MSU history, and was 13-under-par, matching the program record for score in relation to par. Gilliam ended the year by shooting 10-consecutive rounds of par or better.
"The Mississippi State Athletic Department has such expertise that she has welcomed into her system for improvement, those superior services and care are facilitating excellence on the course", said Brown-Lemm. "I am excited not only for her future, but the future of the program as a result of her contribution."
