STARKVILLE – Driving through town has become a learning experience for Lindsey Williams. The senior engineering major now sees bit of her classwork everywhere she goes.
Â
"I did an internship this summer and as I was learning different things, I noticed myself seeing things like how far a line was from the road or how deep a culvert is," Williams said.
Â
The same thing happens while traveling across the country with the Mississippi State softball team. Williams loves the opportunity to see different structures and layouts in different regions of the country.
Â
"When we travel through Texas, I get to see all the big roads there," she said. "Transportation and transit is completely different everywhere. It's cool to see different aspects of the world."
Â
Her teammates have noticed. Between her observations and the schoolwork she always seems to be doing while they travel, Williams said they often ask if she ever takes a break.
Â
For the record, she does.
Â
Williams has taken up cooking in the few moments she gets away from the field and her coursework. She's come a long way from her first failed meal, a burned bowl of macaroni and cheese.
Â
How'd that happen?
Â
"I forgot to put water in the easy mac cup," she said. "My whole kitchen was smoky. I had to go open up a door."
Â
After a lot of practice and scouring Pinterest for recipes, she's gotten the hang of it, and her parents are now reaping the benefits. Back home in Mobile, Alabama, for the remainder of the semester, she's made a deal with her mom.
Â
"I told my mom as long as she bought the groceries that I would cook," Williams said. "The best meal I've cooked is my stuffed chicken with asparagus and mozzarella cheese in it. It only takes about 20 minutes to cook. It's an easy, but really good meal."
Â
Her other hobby is singing, and she frequently entertains her teammates with a chorus or two in the locker room. She's a big fan of country music, which has the rest of the Bulldogs divided on whether to encourage her or shut it down, but it's something she's been into for as long as she can remember.
Â
"My dad loves listening to music too," she said. "Whenever we get in the car, we're always singing. I've never sung for anything [in public] because I get so nervous, but maybe if I'd had more lessons, I'd be more confident."
Â
That lack of confidence hasn't stopped her though. When the 2020 season began, Williams was one of the first to volunteer to sing the National Anthem at a softball game. For some reason she can't quite describe, the crowds in the friendly confines of Nusz Park don't seem to bother her. After all, she's been performing on that field for four years and has just hit her stride, launching her first career home runs in February.
Â
Maybe she'll be able to knock it out of the park with the microphone as well.
