Davidson’s Two-Homer Night Leads Bulldogs to In-State Victory
March 11, 2020 | Softball

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Mia Davidson needed a triple to hit for the cycle. Instead she hit her second home run in as many innings to propel Mississippi State softball to a 7-2 victory over in-state foe Southern Miss on Wednesday night.
Davidson went a perfect 4-for-4, hitting nearly identical two-run homers in the fourth and fifth innings. She scored three runs, and her career-high four hits were one shy of the MSU single-game record.
"It was good to see Mia get on a roll for us going into SEC play for us," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "We knew that we needed a good plan coming down to play in Hattiesburg. They always have a great crowd for us, and it's fun to have an opportunity to play in the southern half of our state. I thought the pitchers did a great job of mixing speeds and keeping them off balance."
The first four Bulldog batters reached base on three consecutive singles and a walk. Another run came home on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to give State an early two-run lead. Southern Miss (14-8) got one run back in the bottom half before Davidson took over the game.
Davidson first home run brought home Brylie St. Clair who had reached on a walk. Fa Leilua singled behind her and scored on Candace Denis' double down the right field line to make it a three-run fourth for State (25-3, 0-0 SEC). The Golden Eagles scored a final run in the bottom of the seventh, resulting in the final score.
Alyssa Loza got the start in the circle for the Bulldogs and threw 3.0 innings with three strikeouts. Grace Fagan earned the win in relief with 3.0 no-hit innings while striking out four.
