NORMAN, Okla. – In the middle of one of the best freshman seasons in Mississippi State history, Ashley Gilliam has earned a spot in the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup rankings.
The Arnold Palmer Cup, which was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America, is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers. The tournament matches the golfers from the United States against a team of international players.
Gilliam has had a sensational start to the year, most recently earning the top finish of her career at the Westbrook Invitational after tying for second by carding a 13-under par, 203. The stellar performance matched the best finish in relation to par by a Bulldog in program history.
Because of her effort at the Westbrook Invitational, Gilliam was tabbed the SEC Golfer of the Week. In addition to her strong outing, she also broken two MSU freshman season records over the weekend. She set the record for rounds of par or better (13) as well as most rounds in the 60's (5).
For the year, she has placed inside the top 25 of every tournament she has competed in and has finished inside the top 10 in four consecutive events, including three top-3 finishes. During the summer, she qualified and advanced to match play in the prestigious U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
Gilliam is in contention to be selected for the 2020 running of the tournament, which will be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.
The top six golfers from the final rankings in the spring from both the United States and international men and women – 12 total golfers – will be among the 24 individuals selected to compete in the Arnold Palmer. Using Golfstat's NCAA player rankings as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The next Arnold Palmer Cup rankings will be announced March 5th, while Gilliam currently sits at 17th place.
