BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After posting her best performance of the season over the weekend, Mississippi State freshman Ashley Gilliam was tabbed the SEC Golfer of the Week after leading Bulldogs to the win at the 2020 Westbrook Invitational.
Gilliam earned the top finish of her career at the event, tying for second by carding a 13-under par, 203. The stellar performance matched the best finish in relation to par by a Bulldog in program history. She has now finished inside the top 10 in four consecutive events, including three top-3 finishes.
"I played really well this week," said Gilliam. "I had some putts drop and stayed patient during the 36 holes and during my final round. I'm really proud of the team for how we played this week. It finally came together, and we got the team win."
Gilliam's play fueled Mississippi State to again break into the NCAA Division I record book. The 32-under-par performance for the weekend, tied the 12th-lowest team 54-hole score in relation to par in NCAA Division history while also shattering the MSU record by 10 strokes. During the weekend, Gilliam broke two MSU freshman season records. She set the record for rounds of par or better (13) as well as most rounds in the 60's (5).
Gilliam shot par or better on 52 of the 54 holes during the tournament, including 13 birdies and an eagle. She birdied three straight holes on the back nine of the final round to help MSU erase a five-stroke deficit and rally past Oklahoma for the victory. She also carded a 5-under-par in the second round to help State shoot 18-under for the round, which matched the sixth-best team round in relation to par in Division I history.
