CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – A five-spot in the second inning lifted Mississippi State softball to a 6-3 victory against UC Riverside (6-7) on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Candace Denis and Aquana Brownlee each drove in a pair of runs, and Madisyn Kennedy hit a solo home run in the game.
"The girls really made some good adjustments today," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "Many of our outs were even hard-hit balls. We've been waiting to see the pieces of our lineup all come together at the same time, and we really saw that in the big inning."
After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, MSU (11-2) answered in a big way in the second. State reached base on three hits and four errors as the Bulldogs batted around on their way to five runs.
Anna Kate Segars singled to lead off the inning, and Kennedy reached on an error. Following a fly out, the next four batters reached on three hits, an error and a walk.
Kennedy added an insurance run with her third homer of the year in the third. The Highlanders fought back to push two runs across with two outs in the seventh, resulting in the final score.
Aspen Wesley got the start in the circle and went 3.0 innings, allowing one run. Alyssa Loza threw four innings in relief to get the win.
Mia Davidson – Went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Candace Denis – Drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field.
Madisyn Kennedy – Hit her third home run of the year, which is third on the team … Scored twice.
Emma Ramelot doubled to lead off the game and slid under a tag at third as Danielle Ortega reached on a fielder's choice. Sarah Parten walked to load the bases. With two outs, Marissa Burk walked to bring home the game's first run.
