Bulldogs In Sixth After Day One Of Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate
November 08, 2020 | Men's Golf
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – On Sunday, Mississippi State men's golf teed off the final tournament of its fall season at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
Â
The Bulldogs carded a 2-under 278 to finish round one of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at sixth place.
Â
Sophomore Ford Clegg paced the Bulldogs, shooting an impressive 4-under 66 and five birdies to tie for fourth place. Senior Garrett Johnson finished the round with an even 70 and also collected five birdies to tie for 29th.
Â
Sophomore Ben Nelson and freshman Hunter Logan both shot 71s for the day to tie for 42nd. Freshman Loïc Ettlin shot a 73 in the opening round to tie for 52nd.
Â
"I thought we did a great job of getting off to the start we needed today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "All of our guys were battling and competing hard the entire day. Ford played a great round and was able to finish it off in a big way today. Our final few holes were definitely the toughest out there but that is no excuse for how we executed coming down the stretch.
Â
"We have to find a way to stay in the moment and finish the round we had going. I think it's important that we come out excited for a new opportunity tomorrow, and that we will put ourselves in the exact same position we did today because that is how you show resilience and get better."
Â
Tournament play will resume on Monday, and the Bulldogs will tee off at 9:50 a.m. CT.
